HAITI SCHOOL FUND – At a Glance

The idea:
This project is a fund-raising exercise to equip a Students’ Resource Center in Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti, with items such as tables, chairs, books, computers etc. The beneficiaries will be primary and high school students. Most schools in Haiti were destroyed during the January 12, 2010 earthquake in that country.

Ultimate Goal:
To build a Primary School in Haiti

Immediate Objective:
To equip a Students’ Resource Center for primary and secondary school pupils. The center will be used for after-school studies.  

Fund Raising:
*Target: $40,000        
*Equipment Needs: Computers, Printers, Desk Lamps, Projectors, Screens & Cables, Desks, Tables, Chairs, Filing Cabinets, Shelves, French  & Kreyol Dictionaries, Maps & Charts, Stationery
*Note:  The fund is for the purchase and maintenance of equipment for a 5-year period
*The fund-raising activity is scheduled for the week of January 24 – 29, 2011. There will be a symposium about how the international media report the tragedy. Three Pulitzer journalists will share their experiences in covering the Haitian tragedy with the audience. Also scheduled to speak is a representative of the “Haitianministries”.

*Fund Drive will be launched in January 24-29, 2011
*The symposium scheduled for Thursday, January 27, 2011 @ SIUC Students Center, Ballroom D (7 p.m.)
*The symposium will focus on Haiti: After the Quake
*The symposium is being sponsored by: School of Journalism and  Global Media Research Center, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC); The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting

The Students’ Resource Center is being promoted by the Haitian Ministries, a not-for-profit Christian organization with headquarters at the Catholic Diocese of Norwich, Connecticut, U.S.A. Basic information about the Haitian Ministries for the Diocese of Norwich, CT:
i.    25 years of  humanitarian services in Haiti:
ii.   Supports 2 Orphanages + daily meal program for children
iii.   Education: offers scholarships to 150 students
iv.   Health: Supports a medical clinic; has a medical mission
v.    Agriculture/Environment: Runs a reforestation project
vi.   Others: Provides emergency relief

Appeal:
To have people of goodwill support this effort. We are reaching out to all segments of our immediate community in Carbondale-Murphysboro; and the staff, students and faculty at Southern Illinois Univeristy at Carbondale (SIUC). Contributions are voluntary and will be deposited at the bank account mentioned above.

Prime Movers:
This idea was conceptualized by Uche Onyebadi and is being actively promoted by the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, students, faculty and staff from other colleges and departments at SIUC. We are doing this as a concerned community.
